Questions
What families ask us
How does admissions work?
Families visit, apply and hear back within two weeks of a visit day. The admissions page lists each step and the months they fall in.
When are open houses and visit days?
Open houses are in October and March. Visit days run on Wednesdays from September to May, and the Book a visit button at the top of any page books one.
Can we visit before applying?
Yes. A visit day is how most families begin. Your child joins the group outdoors, you walk the ridge with us, and you talk with a guide.
What is a day like?
The day starts at the meadow gate at 8:30 and ends there at 3:00. On Monday to Wednesday the group walks, makes and reads outdoors, and on Thursday and Friday it works at the long table in the room.
How does tuition work, and how do we ask about aid?
Tuition depends on the days a student comes. The tuition page explains how a place is held and how to ask about financial aid, and the guides go through it at a visit.
How big is the school?
Sixteen students, aged 5 to 10, with two guides.
What do students of different ages do together?
Reading, writing and math are in two groups by age. The walks, lunch, making and the notebooks are mixed ages, so a five-year-old and a ten-year-old can share a blanket.
What happens in bad weather?
Rain means rain gear and lunch under the shelter. Lightning sends everyone into the room, and ice or snow on the mountain road closes the school. The full list is on the safety page.
What about lunch, clothes and phones?
Families send lunch and a water bottle. Students dress in layers and sturdy shoes, with no uniform, and phones stay switched off in the backpack.
How does the school talk with families?
A note goes home every Friday, a guide meets each family once a term, and either guide will talk at the gate at drop-off or pickup.
